Civil War letter of Naval interest signed by John Dahlgren, dated July 20th, 1864,
from the flag steamer Philadelphia off Moris Island, S.C., addressed to Commander Thos. H. Patterson, commanding USS James Adger, inscribed
Sir, the rebel pirate"Florida" made her appearance near the capes of the Chesapeake, and destroyed some vessels. It is not improbable that she may come within the limits of the Squardron. In view of these facts, you will please direct the"Williams" at Murrells Inlet and the Flambeau at Cape Roman to choose stations within signal distance of the"James Adger" and where the guns of wither made be heard by you. In case of an attack by the"Florida" or any other rebel cruiser, you will communicate the fact to the vessels on the Station to the northward and southward of you, and very exertion must be made to ensure her capture. Signed J. Dahlgren Rear Admiral, Commanding S. A. B. Squadron", two pages, 9 1/2" x 7 1/2". Provenance: The Ephemera Collection of Joseph Rubinfine, Merritt Island, Florida.
