Christoph Saur Gun Wad Bible, printed in Germantown, 1776, this is the first Bible printed from American-made type. When British soldiers invaded Germantown in 1777, they found and used Saurs printed but still unbound bible pages to make cartridges for their guns and as bedding for their horses, hence the name Gun Wad Bible, 10 1/2" x 8".
