Chippendale mahogany easy chair, ca. 1765, probably Irish, with serpentine crest and outward flaring arms supported by front shell carved cabriole legs joined by turned stretchers terminating in ball and claw feet. Originally owned by Mayor Robert Strettell? and descended directly in his family to the present owner. Illustrated in Horner, Blue Book of Philadelphia Furniture, pl. 376.

Condition

Repair to right rear leg. Worm holes in medial stretcher (not active). Extensive worm damage to left rear leg. Extremely fine very old finish. This is a striking chair.
