Chester County, Queen Anne walnut secretary desk, dated 1744, possibly made by Joel Bailey for Isaac and Ann Marshall in the year of their wedding, the molded cornice over a raised tombstone panel door flanked by recessed panels, above a fall front enclosing a fitted interior with a prospect door inlaid IM 1744, over two short and two long drawers and a fishtail apron supported by bracket feet, 75" h., 35" w. Illustrated in Schiffer, Furniture and its Makers of Chester County Pennsylvania, fig. 129. A related example signed by Joel Bailey is illustrated in fig. 2. While the original owner is not definitively known, a line of decent can be drawn from Isaac to Mrs. Elmer Schultz of West Chester, Pennsylvania whom the desk was purchased from in 1953.
