Chester County, Queen Anne walnut secretary desk, dated 1744, possibly made by Joel Bailey for Isaac and Ann Marshall in the year of their wedding, the molded cornice over a raised tombstone panel door flanked by recessed panels, above a fall front enclosing a fitted interior with a prospect door inlaid IM 1744, over two short and two long drawers and a fishtail apron supported by bracket feet, 75" h., 35" w. Illustrated in Schiffer, Furniture and its Makers of Chester County Pennsylvania, fig. 129. A related example signed by Joel Bailey is illustrated in fig. 2. While the original owner is not definitively known, a line of decent can be drawn from Isaac to Mrs. Elmer Schultz of West Chester, Pennsylvania whom the desk was purchased from in 1953. Upper section lacking lock. One drawer lip missing 1 1/2" section to right top edge. Patch to left top edge on slant. Small loss to interior drawer lip. Brass replaced. Crack in one front foot facing. Crack in base molding. Minor age crack to side. Front left foot ended out 1 1/2".
