Central Pennsylvania, possibly Mahantongo Valley, canted side storage box, 19th c., with typical red and yellow stamped rosettes on a green ground, 3 3/4" h., 11 3/8"l., 6 1/2" d. For examples of these rosettes found on many pieces of Mahantongo furniture, see Reed, Decorated Furniture of the Mahantongo Valley. Examples of small boxes with rosettes are listed on page 93 and are found in private collections. Provenance: James F. Spears.
Minor chip on one upper corner. Overall excellent condition with minor wear.
