A large and important Burlington County New Jersey silk on linen sampler dated 1823, wrought by Sarah Ann Hartman, 21 1/4" x 25", frame - 25 3/8" x 29". Dramatic in scope, this work features a verse on friendship surrounded by assorted animals, flowers, and Quaker motifs over an elaborate depiction of a school and a lawn filled with figures and animals. For a further discussion of Quaker needleworks of Burlington County see Betty Ring Girlhood Embroidery Vol. II, pp. 476-486. Illustrated: Glee Krueger A Gallery of American Samplers, pp. 60-61. Exhibited: Museum of American Folk Art November, 1978. Provenance: Sotheby's, The Theodore H. Kapnek Collection, January 31, 1981, lot 106; Stephen & Carol Huber, Connecticut.

Competitive in-house shipping is available for this lot.

Condition

Overall good with some minor scattered small stains. Halfway down the left side of the sampler are the initials, "AMM." According to research by Marty Campanelli, one of the curators of Morven Museum & Gardens 2014 New Jersey needlework exhibit, Hail Specimen of Female Art, these script initials represent Ann Maria Moynihan. Ms. Campanelli gave a presentation in 2023 at Penn Dry Goods on this particular sampler instructress and the nine examples known from her school in Medford, Burlington Co., NJ; The existing samplers date from 1817 to 1830. The earliest dated piece, stitched by the instructress's niece, names "Ann Maria Moynihan's School Medford." Sarah Ann Harman's 1823 example has just the teacher's initials and the remainder do not show any name or initials, but the style of the samplers, the motifs, and verses indicate they were clearly done under Miss Moynihan's tutelage.
