Burlington County, New Jersey silk on linen needlework sampler, inscribed "Charlotte Hough Daughter of Samuel and Susannah Hough Aged 10 Years 1799 Sarah Shoemaker", executed in a variety of stitches in green, red, peach, blue, orange, and brown silk with alphabet, numbers, trees, birds, and floral vines over a verse flanked by potted floral trees and deer, all within a strawberry border, 16 1/2" x 15". Pictured in Girlhood Embroidery by Ring, fig. 523. This sampler is one of seven done under the tutorial of school mistress Sarah Shoemaker. Provenance: James and Nancy Glazer; Joan Stephens Collection, Sotheby's January 19, 1997.
Overall excellent condition. A few very small stains.
