Boston William & Mary painted armchair, ca. 1730, with a carved crest and banister back, above a rush seat and baluster and block turned legs joined by stretchers, retaining an exceptional paint history with an old red over an earlier red and the original black surface. A side chair of similar form is illustrated in Forman, American Seating Furniture, 1630-1730, plate 67.

Condition

Repaired break to crest where it joins stile. Repaired break to one slat. Repaired break to crest at one end. Repaired breaks with patches to rear where seat frame joins. One side stretcher replaced. Later red surface over original black.
