An important Mifflin County, Pennsylvania painted pine and poplar salt box, ca. 1874, initialed M.Z.P. for Melinda Zook Plank and signed by the maker Samuel Plank on backboard Made by S.L. Plank near Allensville, Pa. Price $1.00, the box remains in a wonderful state of preservation with its original floral designs on an ivory ground with blue surround and red drawers, possibly presented as a wedding gift to Melinda in 1874, 15 3/4" h., 13" w., 7 1/2" d. Illustrated in Bonson et al., Pennsylvania Folk Art of Samuel L. Plank, front cover and pls. 46, 47, and 48.
