American oil on canvas portrait of an officer, ca. 1765, bearing the signature of C.W. Peale, 32" x 25 1/2". Although possibly by Peale, this piece more closely resembles the work of his mentor, John Hesselius. Major repaired tear (12", jagged, through arm/chest, but not near face, repair poorly done). Three repaired tears next to head. A few other smaller touch-ups. Very very dirty. Original stretcher. Later gold colored frame.
