Monumental American carved and painted spread winged eagle ornament, ca. 1810
, retaining an old yellow surface over remnants of original gilding and a period wrought iron fastening plate, 27" h., 57 1/2" w. The large size, construction, and carving make this exceptional eagle most likely from the workshop of Benjamin Rush (1756-1833). Old chips to tips of wings, tail feathers and beak. Depth from the back edge of the wing to the front edge of the base is 22-23". Measurement of the tail feathers to the front is 17 1/2". Base is 12" w. (rocks only).
