Monumental American carved and painted spread winged eagle ornament, ca. 1810, retaining an old yellow surface over remnants of original gilding and a period wrought iron fastening plate, 27" h., 57 1/2" w. The large size, construction, and carving make this exceptional eagle most likely from the workshop of Benjamin Rush (1756-1833). Provenance: Removed from the Dependable (formerly Eagle) Moving and Storage Company, Philadelphia and purchased at auction near Line Lexington in 2005.

Condition

Old chips to tips of wings, tail feathers and beak. Depth from the back edge of the wing to the front edge of the base is 22-23". Measurement of the tail feathers to the front is 17 1/2". Base is 12" w. (rocks only).
