Abraham Cooper (British 1787-1868), oil on canvas of the race horse Elis, ridden by John Day, with his trainer John Doe to his right, monogrammed lower right and dated 1838. Best known for winning the St. Leger Stakes in 1836. Elis's two year racing career boasted eleven wins out of 15, finishing 2nd in all four defeats, 34 1/2'' x 44''. Provenance: Malvern, Pennsylvania estate.

Relined. Scattered touch up bottom right (does not appear to touch any inscriptions. 3'' tear through horses head on right. Other minor small touch ups.
