1906 San Francisco earthquake photo album, containing forty-eight annotated original photographs taken just after the devastating April 18, 1906 earthquake and fire in San Francisco, Santa Clara, and San Jose, with images recording fire damaged buildings and some refugee camps. The 7.9 magnitude earthquake and subsequent fires destroyed over 80% of the city of San Francisco, which at the time was the largest city on the West Coast. Makeshift refugee camps located in Golden Gate Park, the Presidio, the Panhandle, and the beaches between Ingleside and North Beach operated for years after the disaster. These images show rubble along trolley lines, refugees dragging their belongings in wagons, the destroyed Vendome Hotel in San Jose, the ruins of the Pacific Manufacturing Co. in Santa Clara, refugee camps on the grounds of the gutted Agnews Asylum for the Insane, a US Army camp in Santa Clara, refugee camp No. 3 in Golden Gate Park, and more. The photos remain in their original dark blue cloth bound album, 12" x 5 1/2".

Competitive in-house shipping is available for this lot.

Condition

Good condition overall, about half of the photos have a loss in contrast (25/47 have fading), pages with some waviness, some with minor edge wear.
